The best time of the year is right around the corner. Holiday parties, cocktails, my mom’s homemade chex mix, turkey, appetizers…not to mention all those sweets that people bring to work that you don’t even want, but you eat anyway.
It’s always a battle this time of the year, but this year, I want to battle back. I joined another gym that is close to my work so I can squeeze in a 35 minute workout during lunch, I have been wearing my Fitbit to make sure I hit the 10,000 step minimum a day, and I have been staying busy on the weekends with outside activities. Nick and I try to do at least one of two active things a weekend. We will go on a hike, bike ride, walk to the beach, play tennis, explore somewhere new etc. Now I know you may be thinking, okay great Korina, you live in California, must be nice! Well that is true, and that is one of the reasons why I moved here 🙂 But my East coasters, don’t be afraid to get out there and get moving even if it’s chilly out! Plus there are a ton of cute cold weather work-out clothes that you can wear also (isn’t it more fun to work out when you have new stuff to wear? Of course I wish my whole work-out wardrobe was Lululemon, but surprisingly, Old Navy, TJ Maxx/Marshalls and even Victoria’s Secret also have some cute and affordable workout gear for us gals on a budget).
Another thing that helps is attending classes. It breaks up the boring old gym and can get you excited for workouts again. Groupon and Living Social have some great deals for yoga, bikram yoga, pilates, barre, spinning, kettle bell, etc., so you can give them a try for a decent price & see if you like. I was doing the Pilates reformer machines for awhile and loved the classes! The only thing is, these classes can be pricey. It is still fun to do on the occasion to switch up your routine.
So the moral is, do something; don’t throw in the towel and think “oh well it’s the holidays I don’t care.” Care at least a little bit and you will be glad you did. I know I am going to feel better indulging on apps & cocktails after putting some work in at the gym in the weeks prior. I am working on balancing my life and being a well-rounded, happy person. Food & drink make me happy; not fitting into my jeans doesn’t make me happy; so I need to find a balance between the both.
